Traditional VS Compound

After a little research for the article, "Best Archers of All Time," that I wrote last year, I quickly realized that today's archery has changed a bit. Duh. If you're not an archery historian, and I'm not claiming to be, then you'll find the feats of Ishi, Saxton Temple Pope, and the likes incredible. And then you have my personal favorite, Howard Hill (pictured above).

Howard was a graduate from Auburn and an all-around athlete. He played baseball, basketball and football for the University of Auburn and went on the be a golf pro. I imagine just because he could. Like many early archers, he was inspired by the writings of Maurice Thompson. It was after reading The Witchery of Archery that Hill decided he wanted to shoot a bow; and he did just that.

Hill went on to kill more than 2,000 animals with his longbow. His claim to fame, like killing 2,000 animals isn't worthy, was being the first white man to kill an elephant with his bow (1950). The equipment he used? Well, let's just say it wasn't for Sally Cupcakes.
  • 41-inch aluminum arrow
  • Enlarged version of Howard Hill Broadhead, weighing 1700 grains
  • Handmade longbow with a draw weight of 115 pounds
Hill was a man. And I often think he would laugh at many of us for using compounds, but traditional equipment is not for everyone. But every man or woman should at least own one and shoot it once. Why? Because understanding where this great sport came from makes you appreciate today's modern technology a little more.

If you don't believe me, go try and build your own bow, arrows and broadheads. Report back when you get hungry.
