It's Pretty Much Over!

For the most part, this season is in the books. Other than some action wrapping up in a couple of southern states, and the Southwest's Coues whitetail deer season, which closes at the end of January, this season is pretty much over. Reflecting back on some of the monsters that were displayed here on the Rack Report, it looked like many guys and gals had a really good season. Although the Mid-West always seems to lead the pack as far as headbone goes, for the most part, all regions of the country had their share of bruisers fall this season.

However, for many guys Lady Luck just didn't fall their way, and you can put yours truly at the top of that heap. In fact, looking back at all the mishaps, screw-ups and just plain bad luck, it would be fairly easy to write a country song about it.

It started out well enough--as most cowboy songs do--with a buck on the ground in the Black Hills of Wyoming. I saw a ton of deer there, and on the fourth day I was able to put it together and whack a mature buck with my bow. However, it all went downhill from there. Lets just say the Mid-West was a hard pill to swallow, both times. With Iowa and Kansas bow tags in my pocket, and a couple of weeks off during the pre-rut and rut, I thought for sure I would have at least one P&Y candidate on the ground. Although I had numerous 2 and 3 year old bread-and butter bucks stroll under my stand, none had enough bone.

When it's all said and done, however, I guess I can't complain too much. I did get to spend some time in the woods, and did kill a buck and a couple of does. Besides, my trail cameras have already revealed several bucks that made it through the season. Can't wait until November!!!

Cheers

I feel your pain.

I hunted 38 times between September and January, learned every possible lesson the hard way and came up short.

Great blog though, I'm glad there is something to read in the downtime while I stare at the calendar.
