Ohio Changes Muzzleloader Dates
I just learned that Ohio has changed the dates of it's muzzleloader season for next year. In the past, the Muzzleloader season was held after Christmas. It was great because guys like me could take advantage of holiday breaks to hunt without missing any time in the office. But now the season will be held Jan. 9-12. Here's an excerpt from the Columbus Dispatch:
Like it or not, deer hunters won't be gearing up for the state's annual four-day muzzleloader season until 2010.
The dates will be Jan. 9-12, which encompasses two weekend days but also two workdays. In past years, the muzzleloader hunt has been held after Christmas, when many permit-holders are on break from jobs or school.
The change was approved by the Ohio Wildlife Council this month. It might do some good, said Dave Risley, the Ohio Division of Wildlife executive administrator of wildlife management and research.
"With the addition of the extra weekend of gun hunting, decline in muzzleloader season harvest and the compression of the calendar, we felt that a move into January would add a little 'downtime' for deer hunters and deer, and reinvigorate the season," he said.
About 20,700 deer were taken during the muzzleloader hunt in December. That was a decrease from 2007, when about 21,500 whitetails were tagged, and it continued a longer-term decline. The harvest peaked at almost 28,000 deer in 2004.
The "bonus" weekend of the gun season that occurs in mid-December has boosted the deer harvest in recent years. That might have taken some of the luster off the muzzleloader hunt less than two weeks later.
