Deadlines Loom

Dream of hunting big bucks in the Midwest? Well, you better stop dreaming and start applying.

Several key deadlines are on the horizon for those looking to hunt some of the top whitetail states in the nation.

Iowa and Kansas application periods are underway and both end June 1. The Illinois application period begins June 1 for archery permits.

If you're looking to bowhunt Iowa, you'll need to start accumulating preference points. Generally, you have no shot at drawing a tag without at least one preference point. Many areas require at least two. You can opt to buy a point only which is an easy and cheap way to start planning for the future.

In Kansas, the rules for drawing a tag changed last year and while it's not a guarantee, the odds of drawing a tag without any points is very good.

For Illinois, you should be able to get an archery tag the first you apply.

All of those licenses can be applied for online -- in fact Kansas now requires online application. So check out the state websites for Illinois, Iowa and Kansas. Then start practicing.
