Time to Change Gears

Man, I've had a great turkey season. I've been fortunate enough to spend a lot of time in the woods with my wife, my dad, and a bunch of friends chasing gobblers in Tennessee, Kentucky, and, late last week, South Dakota. I've found responsive birds nearly everywhere I've hunted this season, despite a somewhat rainy weather trend.
But I had to resign myself to the fact that spring is coming to a close, and summer is just around the corner. When I checked the mail today, sweat soaked through my shirt. But that's OK. In a few short months, the early September bow season, one of my favorite times to hunt, will be opening in Kentucky.
I've actually seen numerous deer while turkey hunting this year, and three different bachelor groups of bucks. Two of those bachelor groups are more than 1,000 miles away in South Dakota and likely safe from me next season, but one trio strolled right up to Michelle and I as we sat blind-calling one April morning in Kentucky. Two of them were young guys, but one was already showing velvet nubs thick enough for some potential this fall.
All in all, this is a good time of year. Fishing is going full blast, and I'll be doing a little catfish noodling soon. I'll probably pull my bow out and start shooting before long, as I haven't opened my bow case since pig hunting in Florida back in February. And hey, there will be food plots to plant and stands to hang soon enough. Yes sir. Pre-deer-season will be here before you know it.
Will
