Iowa Governor Ups Deer Tag Prices?
Iowa has had one of the most pricy non-resident whitetail tags with the cost topping $400. Well, now you can add another $100 or so to that price.
The price for nonresidents to hunt in Iowa increased on May 27 when Iowa Governor Chet Culver signed into law a bill that increased the a nonresident hunting license from $80.50 to $110.50 and a deer hunting preference point from $10 to $50.50. A deer tag costs non-residents $423.50. That's a grand total of $544 for an any-deer tag. Of course that includes a "free" antlerless tag.
I admit that I'm not a financial genius but I think this is why governments are always in the red -- they have no idea how to generate revenue. There is a thing called the law of diminishing returns. When you continue to jack up prices, there comes a point when people get fed up and refuse to buy. That's when your jackpot of revenue goes bust. Will hunters continue to go to Iowa? Yes. But I think Iowa will see a decline in the number of hunters that it attracts. A $50 fee just to apply for a preference point? Clearly, someone gave Gov. Chet some bad advice on this one.
Am I wrong on this one?
