$7 Well Spent

I'll be the first to admit it: I'm a notorious cheapskate and somewhat proud of it. Maybe that's one subconscious reason why I've chosen to be an outdoor writer. This isn't a millionaire's club profession--but it's a good way to finagle free hunting stuff.

But being a cheapskate doesn't necessarily mean avoiding expenditures at all costs. On the contrary--if I find something I really need for a good price, I'll sometimes buy it. Today, Michelle was shopping at Wal-Mart and going through some clearance items in the sporting goods section. Among the things she found was a gunsmith's screwdriver set for $7. She called me at work, asked if I wanted it, and although I cringed a bit at the thought of releasing the funds, I recalled all the marred scope-ring screws, dented assembly pins, and dinged hex nuts I've seen on my own guns and on friend's guns over the years. This would be $7 well spent; an investment. So I told her to go ahead.

I examined the set a little later, and must say, it appears to be well made. I've been meaning to pull a few guns out of the cabinet for a pre-season cleaning anyway here before too long--surely I can find something that requires adjustment.
