Be A Joiner

Okay, there are times when you should employ the "24 Hour Rule" -- the rule where you allow a 24-hour cooling off period before you send any e-mails. This may be one of those times but, hey, if I can't vent to some fellow Realtree hunters, who can I vent to? So here goes:

The hunting and fishing community needs to get it together. And quick. I know the economy is in the tank. Trust me, it's about all I'm able to focus on. I work for a non-profit conservation group called Michigan United Conservation Clubs. It's a cool gig. We fight for the rights of Michigan's sportsmen and women. We've been at it for about 70 years. Sure, we've made some bad moves along the way. But, by and large, I think we've done pretty good work.

Well, support for MUCC -- and nonprofit conservation groups across the board -- has been in steady decline. I understand that to a degree. Times are tough and people have lost their jobs. But what about those of us who are still employed? Who still have a few bucks to buy a license or a new bow. What's our excuse. And I admit that I'm no different. Sitting here I realize that my membership to NWTF and QDMA has lapsed. I haven't renewed. That's inexcusable.

I believe in the work of those groups. I love their publicaitons. So why haven't I sent in my membership dues? Apathy. I don't feel compelled to do so. I should know better.

The Humane Society of the United States, the anti-hunting zealots based in Washington, D.C. have assigned a full-time staff person to Michigan. Why? Becuase they know our economy is struggling. They know groups like MUCC are in a weakened state. And they're planning to strike.

If we, as hunters and anglers, don't start supporting the groups that defend us, we're going to lose this fight. I'm not trying to scare anyone. I'm speaking only the truth.

So consider this your call to action. Renew your memberships. Join a new group. Send $10 to an org of your choice. You may not think your membership fee or small donation matters -- trust me it does far more than you know.

Thanks for reading -- and thanks for supporting your sports.

Tony Hansen, Michigan Man
