Took a Walk Last Weekend...

Walking through standing field corn when it's 90 degrees out may not be the most pleasant activity around, but it can provide quick answers for a bowhunter. Last Sunday, I needed to check on one of my stands, since a big Kentucky ice storm last winter left a lot of tree damage in its wake. My stand and the black oak where it's hanging were both OK, and the deer are definitely beginning to use the corn around it. I carried my camera along and got pictures of trails, squirrels, and of this doe's rear end. No, it won't make the cover of Outdoor Life, but it's a sure-enough real shot of a wild deer in standing corn. I walked right up on her while she was bedded down, and she stood just long enough for me to snap one shot. Too much stuff in the way to see her head at first, but when she bolted and stopped just inside the woods, I was able to snap one more. I didn't see a fawn around, but that doesn't mean much. Maybe she'll amble by my bow stand in early September.

Hot or not, it was good to be back in the woods.
