Early Season Tactics
Question: Would deer respond to horn rattling and grunting during the early part of the whitetail season or should I wait until the rut? Because I have harvested the majority of my biggest deer during the month of January here in South Alabama by grunting and rattling and have never tried this at any other time.
Answer:
Rattling typically works best just before the peak of the rut so I wouldn't rattle early in the season. However, deer vocalize year around to communicate so I call throughout the season. Deer use about a dozen different calls so mix in a variety of them while you're hunting. I tend to increase the intensity of my grunts as the rut approaches. Good luck.
