Pokeweed Problems?
Question: I have recently bought property in Northern Michigan and discovered pokeweed was growing heavily in an area that was clear cut. I went to some sites online that stated pokeweed was harmful to mammals while other sites claimed that it was beneficial to wildlife. The whitetail here seem to love it and I would like to know if I should try to get rid of it or if I should let it grow. What's the scoop?
Answer: Congratulations on purchasing your own property. Pokeweed or pokeberry (Phytolacca americana) is great for wildlife. Deer eat both the fruit and foliage, and many other animals such as birds and bears eat the fruit. I really like to see pokeweed growing in recently-opened areas and many wildlife species do too.
